Jallikattu in Tamilnadu – 21st January 2017 Current Affairs
The Ministry of Environment, Forests, Climate Change and Animals Welfare, is in confusion. From the last few days, there is only one thing that runs in the brains of the Tamilians. That is Jallikattu.
What is Jallikattu in Tamilnadu?
Jallikattu is also known as Eruthazhuvuthal or Manju virattu. In Tamilnadu, Jallikattu is a traditional bull-taming sport organized during Pongal. The Jallikattu sport lies in taming the bull with bare hands inside the arena with the young candidates. Residents of Tamilnadu will try to grab the bull by its horns or tail and wrestle it into submission. There is no major monetary benefits, and prizes in the Jallikattu events. It just includes dhoti, towel, betel leaves, bananas and token cash that is rarely more than Rs 101 on a silver plate.
Regarding Jallikatu Issue in Tamilnadu – Why did the Supreme Court ban Jallikattu?
Environment Ministry has challenged the notification to the Supreme Court in 2011 and was upheld in 2014. The supreme court said that “The bulls cannot be allowed as performing animals, either for Jallikattu events or bullock-cart races in the state of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra or any other place in the country.”
Okay, so why the ban now on Tamilnadu jallikattu?
In 2016, the Environment Ministry has declared that the sport could continue despite the existing ban. But Animal welfare organization such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are opposing this Jallikattu in Tamilnadu.
The Tamilnadu state govt is moving an emergency ordinance to allow Jallikattu on Sunday. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam has promised the People of the Tamilnadu state, i.e., to the Tamilians that he will inaugurate the Jallikattu in Tamilnadu.
