About Indian Air Force (IAF):
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the aerial branch of the Armed Forces of India. Its personnel and its air assets are ranked fourth among the world’s air forces. Its main mission is to secure Indian airspace and carry out an air war during an armed conflict. It was officially established on October 8, 1932 as an auxiliary air force of the British Empire that honored Indian air service during World War II with the prefix Royal. After India gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, the name Royal Indian Air Force was preserved and served on behalf of the Dominion of India. With the transition of the government to a republic in 1950, the prefix Royal was eliminated after only three years. Since 1950, the IAF has been involved in four wars with neighboring Pakistan and one with the People’s Republic of China.
Other important operations carried out by the IAF include Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot, Operation Cactus and Operation Poomalai. The IAF’s mission extends beyond a commitment to hostile forces, with the IAF participating in United Nations peacekeeping missions. The president of India has the rank of Supreme Commander of the IAF. As of July 1, 2017, 139,576 staff members were serving in the Indian Air Force. The Chief of Air Staff, a Chief of Air, is a four-star officer and is responsible for most of the operational command of the Air Force. There is never more than one service technician in the IAF at the same time. The rank of Marshal of the Air Force was once awarded in history by the President of India to Arjan Singh. On January 26, 2002, Singh became the first and so far the only five-star IAF officer.
