About Paschim Medinipur:
Pashchim Medinipur is located in the South-Western part of West Bengal. It was created on 1st January 2020 after separating from Midnapore District. It ranks second amongst all other districts in the state in terms of geographical area. Paschim Medinipur ranks third in terms of the rural population. Paschim Medinipur district is home to most villages of any district in India. This district has 8,694 villages out of which 7,600 are populated and 1,094 are inhabited. It was named as one of the country’s 250 most backward districts by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj in 2006.
It receives funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). This district is a part of the Red Corridor, although there is no record of Maoist related activities for the previous 4 years. Paschim Medinipur district comprises of three subdivisions: Kharagpur, Medinipur Sadar and Ghatal. There are 28 police stations, 29 development blocks, 8 municipalities and 290 Gram Panchayats in Paschim Medinipur District.
