Punjab Roadways is one of the commercial organization. At present, The roadways of Punjab is having a fleet of 868 buses. Additionally, under Punjab roadways, 101 buses of Kilometer Scheme are operating. The Roadways has been operating 2.77 lakhs km daily for different State or Inter-state routes. Also, Punjab State Bus Stand Management Company Limited (PUNBUS) has purchased 360 new buses and has put on the routes during the current financial year 2005 to 2006. This has been done by raising the loan of Rs. 40.00 Crore from Oriental Bank of Commerce. PANBUS Operates these based on the valid route permits of the Punjab Roadways and is also giving good results. PUNBUS took 40.00 Crore loan from the banks to purchase 300 more buses. However, About 5.00 Lakhs passengers travel daily in the buses of Punjab Roadways.

Punjab Roadways came into existence in the year 1948. The roadways initially started with 13 buses, which rose gradually to its highest strength of 2407 buses, by the year 1985. Is objective is to provide better service.Through PUNBUS, a fully owned government company the Punjab Roadways replaced 534 buses. This happened in the year 1997-98 and 1998-99. Almost 150 buses under Kilometer Scheme were inducted in the year 2000 in order to reinforce the fleet of Punjab Roadways by hiring Private buses and to operate on the routes on which Punjab Roadways holds valid Permits. The Punjab roadways primary objective is to provide an economical, comfortable and reliable transport service in Punjab state by providing service to the neighbor states. Punjab Roadways also provided concessional or free travel to the deserving categories which is identified by the Government of Punjab.

• To provide International Bus Service on Amritsar-Nankana Sahib-Amritsar route and Amritsar-Lahore-Amritsar Route.
• Provide stage carriage transport to the people of Punjab, which is safe, reliable, affordable and responsive to the needs of the people.
• To Provide concessional travel to certain categories of society like students, cancer patients, freedom fighters, old women, journalists, Ex-MLA’s, police personnel’s etc..
• To act as the model employer for the unorganized transport sector by providing employment opportunities to the people of Punjab.
• Provide bus services for special needs of the state and the country like emergencies, rallies etc.
• To operate and maintain the important bus stands of Punjab in its operational jurisdiction.
• Also, the bus stands of Punjab are being operated by Punjab Roadways.
