About Punjab Vidhan Sabha:
After independence and the final partition of India in 1947, the province of Punjab (British India) is divided between India and Pakistan. The Indian Punjab has divided again in 1966 with the formation of the new states of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, together with the current state of Punjab. On November 1, 1966, the southern half of the Punjab, which speaks Hindi, became a separate state of Haryana and the mountainous Pahari, located in the northeast, was entrusted to Himachal Pradesh. Chandigarh was on the border between the two states and became a separate territory of the Union, but serves as capital both in Punjab and in Haryana.
The Legislative Assembly of Punjab was born of the Constitution after the first elections of 1952. Initially, the legislature of the state of Punjab was a two-chamber chamber. The Upper House, that is, the Legislative Council of Punjab was abolished on January 1, 1970 and, as a result, the Punjab legislature was transformed into a unicameral legislature. Since then, the membership in Vidhan Sabha has varied from time to time. During the reorganization in 1966, membership increased from 154 to 87, but increased to 104 after the 1967 general elections. Currently, there are 117 members in the Assembly. The state has 22 districts, 22 cities, and 157 cities that comprise 10 municipal corporations, 98 municipal councils (classes I-24, II-46, III-28) and 57 Nagar Panchayats. The total population of Punjab is 2,77,43,388 inhabitants, of which 1,46,39,465 are men and 1,31,03,873 are women. There are 1.84 crore voters in the state.
