About WRD Maharashtra:
The Department of Water Resources (formerly the Irrigation Department) has a brilliant history of 7 years. The state of Maharashtra was created in 1949 before the partition of Bombay in Maharashtra and Gujarat. In 1949, the Department of Public Works was divided into the Department of Irrigation and the Department of Buildings and Roads. As of October 1, the irrigation service has been designated “Department of Water Resources”. Before the creation of the state of Maharashtra, there were three different laws on irrigation for the three divisions of Mumbai, Pune and Nashik.
For West Maharashtra, the “Mumbai Irrigation Act 19” applies to Vidarbha, the “Central Provision Act of 1949” and the “Hyderabad Irrigation Act 2” to the Marathwada Division. After the restructuring of the state, the development of irrigation has accelerated. In Maharashtra, the geographical area is 1.5 million hectares and the arable area is 1.5 million hectares. The Department of Water Resources plays an important role in the development of agriculture. Maharashtra has done a great job generating irrigation capacity.

At the time of the creation of the state of Maharashtra, the state’s irrigation capacity was estimation done at 1.8 million hectares. Now the irrigation capacity reaches 1.5 million hectares. 1.5 million hectares of irrigation capacity creates through surface water and 1.8 million hectares of surface water. As of June 1, the total irrigation potential generated by surface waters was approximately 1.5 million hectares.
5% of the water use will happen in irrigation, 5% for domestic use, 5% for industrial use and the rest for the use of thermal, hydroelectric or thermal energy. Other purposes Most people in Maharashtra depend on agriculture or their activities. The place of agriculture and agribusiness is very important in the state’s economy. Therefore, adequate, timely and safe irrigation is very important and necessary for agricultural production. There are 5 rivers in Maharashtra and its total length is approximately 5.7 km. That’s it. The annual rainfall in the state of Maharashtra is generally between 3 and 4 mm. The average rainfall in Maharashtra is 5 mm.
